Menyoal Kebebasan II

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Bagaimanakah jika perangkat lunak di peralatan kesehatan di rumah sakit non-free? Apakah orang sakit harus menolak perawatan rumah sakit? Bagaimana jika nyawa seseorang harus diselamatkan segera tetapi peralatan yang ada hanya yang non-free?

Catatan: saya mendukung Free Software. Ide-ide Free Software lebih saya sukai daripada Open Source. Walau saya suka dua-duanya. Saya sendiri membawakan Free Software ke masyarakat. Namun akhir-akhir ini saya memikirkan satu kasus yang jadi pertanyaan. Sikap saya pribadi jelas, nyawa seseorang harus diselamatkan free atau non-free. Artikel ini adalah sekuel dari artikel sebelumnya.

 

Perbedaan Free Software dan Open Source

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

  1. Open source pecahan dari free software[1].
  2. Free software mengajarkan menolak proprietary[2], open source tidak.
  3. Free software menekankan kebebasan yang empat[3] terjamin sampai kapan pun.
  4. Free software mengampanyekan etika sosial, open source mengampanyekan metodologi pengembangan[4].
  5. Kebanyakan orang mengenal Linux dan GNU dari open source, tidak dari free software[5].
  6. Free software lebih free daripada open source, karena semua free software pasti open source tetapi tidak semua open source itu free software[6].
  7. Free software selalu berbicara mengenai benar-salah, open source menghindari pembicaraan benar-salah[7].
  8. Open source pecah dari free software karena ingin menarik orang sebanyak-banyaknya ke free software, dengan cara pragmatis[8].
  9. Open source merupakan sisi marketing untuk free software[9].
  10. Open source berhenti pada source code[10], pada menarik orang masuk[11], pada produksi perangkat lunak yang powerful dan reliable, tetapi tidak pada memberi kemampuan bertahan pada orang yang masuk. Free software menekankan kemampuan bertahan pada orang yang masuk[12].
  11. Konsekuensi open source adalah adanya kemungkinan orang bisa ditarik kembali kepada proprietary[13] karena alasan powerful dan reliable pula. Free software menekankan kemampuan bertahan dengan pemahaman sehingga lebih sulit ditarik kembali kepada proprietary[15].
  12. Free software tidak melihat open source sebagai musuh[15], sama juga sebaliknya. Namun free software menolak untuk disebut open source[16] oleh karena ada perbedaan fondasi.
